Allianz Kulturstiftung Continues Its Lecture Series 'Reden über Europa' (Talk about Europe) / Wie geht's weiter mit Europa? (What's Next for Europe?) / Matinees on Sunday in the Residenz Theater from January 14 - February 25, 2007

MUNICH - The German Secretary of State, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, his counterpart in Greece, Dora Bakojannis, and the former Italian EU Commissioner, Mario Monti, will open the second part of the series 'Reden über Europa' (Talk about Europe) on January 14. These lectures (a common initiative of the Allianz Kulturstiftung München, the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel and the Süddeutsche Zeitung) will focus on hot topics about the European unification process on six subsequent Sundays until February 25.

Europe is faced with big challenges. Fifty years after signing the Treaty of Rome, the EU will accept in January 2007 Bulgaria and Romania as its 26th and 27th member country. This process will take place during Germany's EU presidency. The expectations for the German government are huge. They span a range from energy and climate, immigration and integration policies to the reform of the EU administration. The plan to revive the work on the European constitution will go parallel to these efforts.

The Allianz lectures will center around these and other topics from January 14 to February 25 in Munich. The first Allianz lecture on January 14 will concentrate on Germany's presidency in the EU and ask the question as to how Athens, Rome and Berlin view the chances for improving the efforts towards European integration. A week after that, Maria Böhmer and Werner Schiffauer will discuss with a German-Russian novelist, a German-African pop singer and a young Bavarian Imam the strategies for improved integration of foreign EU citizens. On January 28, Günter Verheugen, Joseph Stiglitz and Hans Joachim Schellnhuber will face the question whether Europe will be able to assume a leading role in global competition, and whether environmental protective measures will be implemented. In February, Pierre Nora, Gesine Schwan and Robert Traba will reflect on which locations in Europe could be the basis for a unified cultural understanding. Almut Bruckstein, Nilüfer Göle and Tariq Ali will demonstrate the Jewish Islamic impact on our cultural heritage. Juri Andruchowytsch, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Ilma Rakusa and Ilija Trojanow, intellectual and literary voices from the outer borders of Europe, will present a new perspective on our continent.
